First German Patient Receives New Sapheon Varicose Vein Treatment

Sapheon Inc. announced completion of the first Sapheon Closure System treatment in Germany. The new procedure was successfully performed on a patient suffering from bilateral saphenous reflux disease by Dr. Thomas Proebstle at a private clinic in Mannheim, Germany. The patient received the Sapheon treatment without the use of tumescent anesthesia, sedation or post-procedure compression hose.

"I am very pleased to have treated the first patient in my country using the Sapheon system," said Dr. Proebstle. "This new treatment is easy to perform, highly effective, and avoids the substantial pain and discomfort associated with other treatment options for the millions who suffer from saphenous vein disease. Our patient was successfully treated in less than 40 minutes and walked out of the procedure room symptom-free with only a simple Band-Aid."

The Sapheon Closure System, which received CE Mark approval in September 2011, embodies a new approach to the treatment of varicose veins caused by venous reflux disease. Based on an advanced proprietary medical adhesive and single-use catheter-based delivery system, Sapheon´s technology achieves immediate and permanent vein closure without surgery, thermal ablation, or sclerosing chemicals.

Limited sales of the Sapheon Closure System within the EU have commenced while the company scales up for wider distribution in 2012. Sapheon is initiating a post-market study "” the European Sapheon Closure System Observational ProspectivE (eSCOPE) Trial "” in the EU starting in November 2011.
