US says it will inspect Repsol Cuba offshore rig


    WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Spanish oil giant Repsol reassured the United States it will follow American environmental requirements when the company drills for oil in Cuban waters and it will allow U.S. officials to inspect the drilling rig, U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said on Friday.

    Salazar met with representatives from Repsol this week during his visit to Spain. Following the BP Plc oil spill last year in the Gulf of Mexico, the U.S. is now worried that Cuba is unable to ensure its offshore drilling will be safe. Lax U.S. government oversight was faulted in the BP disaster.
