CORRECTED: Australia government to delay carbon trade: report

Corrects paragraph 2 to make clear government may increase current emissions reduction target of 5-15 percent to an unspecified figure

CANBERRA (Reuters) - Australia's government will delay introducing a planned carbon emissions trading scheme by a year to mid-2011, state broadcaster the Australian Broadcasting Corporation said on Monday.

The government would also increase the country's interim 2020 emissions reduction target, currently for a cut of between 5 and 15 percent based on 2000 levels, the broadcaster said, citing unnamed industry sources. Major emissions industries had complained about the planned July 1 start of the scheme next year, saying it would hamper an economic recovery as Australia teeters on the edge of recession amid the global slowdown.
