Dow and S&P 500 sink over 5 percent on recession fear


    NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks tumbled for a second day on Wednesday, with the Dow and the S&P 500 falling more than 5 percent, as disappointing profits and outlooks from a raft of major U.S. companies compounded fears of a global recession.

    The Dow Jones industrial average was down 460.85 points, or 5.10 percent, at 8,572.81. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 55.60 points, or 5.82 percent, at 899.45. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 80.15 points, or 4.72 percent, at 1,616.53.
