Recession fears snuff out Wall Street rally



    NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks slid on Tuesday as fears the global economy may not avert recession slammed shares of technology and consumer companies, eclipsing a government rescue plan for banks.

    The Dow Jones industrial average fell 76.62 points, or 0.82 percent, to end unofficially at 9,310.99, based on the latest available data, while the Standard & Poor's 500 Index declined 5.37 points, or 0.54 percent, to finish unofficially at 997.98. The Nasdaq Composite Index tumbled 65.24 points, or 3.54 percent, to close unofficially at 1,779.01.
