Credit jitters sink stocks at open
A spate of bank rescues in Europe heightened fears about the stability of global financial institutions. Signs that the credit markets remain strained added to the negative tone.
The Dow Jones industrial average was down 261.96 points, or 2.54 percent, at 10,063.42. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 29.78 points, or 2.71 percent, at 1,069.45. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 52.79 points, or 2.71 percent, at 1,894.60.
