Australian independent MPs want economy briefing

CANBERRA (Reuters) - Three Australian cross-bench lawmakers who could decide which party wins government have called for a briefing from Treasury officials about the cost of election promises from the major parties.

The three independents said on Wednesday they had delivered seven points to Prime Minister Julia Gillard and opposition leader Tony Abbott, with the main issue being access to a briefing from the Treasury secretary on the shape of the budget finances. Weekend elections left Australia with its first hung parliament since World War Two, with as many as four independents and one Green MP likely to decide whether Gillard's Labour or conservative rivals win power.
