Wall St losses deepen on economic worry


    NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks extended losses on Thursday, sending the Nasdaq briefly down more than 3 percent, as investors fretted about signs pointing to a faltering economy and dimming outlook for corporate profits.

    Trading was volatile, with indexes gyrating between losses and gains.

    The Dow Jones industrial average was down 48.98 points, or 0.57 percent, at 8,470.23. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 12.71 points, or 1.42 percent, at 884.07. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 42.78 points, or 2.65 percent, at 1,572.97.
