Warden of Lima prison with swimming pool, discotheque fired

Lima, Jul 13 (EFE).- The warden of Lurigancho Prison on Lima's east side was dismissed from his post following reports that inmates there enjoyed a swimming pool and boozy parties, local media said Monday.

A report issued Sunday night by the wife of a prisoner shows photos of inmates partying in a cell block decorated as a disco while purchasing beer and other alcoholic beverages without restrictions.

The photos, according to the report, were taken last March and in some of them a group of prisoners can also be seen in a swimming pool.

The report said that inmates had to buy a permit for 50 soles ($16.60) a week for prison guards to allow them to use mobile phones.

When the news broke, Police Chief Luis Flores Goycochea announced that the prison warden, Eduardo Garcia, and all the guards working at the jail were fired.

Garcia said Monday on TV Channel N that the pictures were taken before he became police chief and are more than four years old, because they supposedly show inmates who were released three years ago.

The now ex-warden said the report was issued by the wife of a prisoner and that she had also served a sentence at Lima's jail for women.

"It's a matter of revenge," he said, while authorities have indicated they will investigate the case.
