3 Bodies found in western Mexico
Though municipal police went to the site in the Sierra de Mazatlan mountains after receiving a report of an armed confrontation, the bodies found Monday had nothing to do with that incident, the AG's office said.
The remains were taken to the medical examiner's office in the Pacific resort city of Mazatlan, where pathologists will attempt to identify the victims and determine cause of death.
The Sierra de Mazatlan is regarded as one of the most dangerous regions in the state, which is the bastion of the Sinaloa drug cartel, Mexico's wealthiest criminal organization.
Though the Sinaloa outfit dominates drug trafficking in the state, rival groups, such as the ultraviolent Los Zetas, have been trying to make inroads.
