Continental Automotive to Demonstrate Airbiquity eCall Technology At UEFA Euro 2008

Airbiquity Inc., a leading provider of wireless data communications software solutions, in partnership with Continental AG´s European Telematics division, today announced its in–band modem technology will be exhibited in an emergency call (eCall) demonstration vehicle onsite at the UEFA Euro 2008 Cup. Fitted with a Continental wireless module, the Volkswagon Passat CC demo car will exemplify what happens when an eCall is initiated, as well as how a call is routed and the resulting actions from emergency services.

Introduced in 2002, the European Commission–lead eCall initiative proposes the use of mobile networks to contact the Public Service Answering Point (PSAP) automatically when an airbag is deployed or when drivers activate a special eCall button built into a vehicle´s cockpit area. Once contacted, the PSAP is able to secure voice communication with accident victims through the mobile network and can automatically obtain the location of distressed vehicles via GPS satellite location technology, along with other critical information related to the accident. The European Commission´s efforts to standardize the service are expected to reach completion by late summer 2008, with a goal of ensuring the adoption of the eCall initiative into all new European automobiles from 2010.

Airbiquity´s technology, already proven in the successful pan–European eCall Feasibility Trial of 2007, uses the aqLink in–band modem and aqServers to transmit and disseminate vital GPS and critical accident–related data from vehicles. Airbiquity´s aqLink in–band modem facilitates connections between vehicles and PSAPs using over–the–air data transmission via either an embedded system or a Bluetooth hands free system, and works over UMTS, GSM and CDMA mobile networks.

"The eCall initiative is simple: Help save lives by reducing the time it takes for emergency services to reach accident victims," says Kamyar Moinzadeh, CEO and President of Airbiquity. "Our in–band modem software is the best choice for the eCall application. The PSAPs require robust and highly–reliable, time–critical data transmission over the largest available coverage area. We´re enthusiastically committed to meeting the European Commission´s aggressive rollout deadline."

Continental´s demo Passat CC will be on display to the public at the TCS Test Ground in Betzholz, Hinwil from 19th to the 29th of June 2008.
