Nasdaq up 1 percent as chip makers rally



    NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks extended their advance in late trading on Monday, with the Nasdaq briefly up more than 1 percent as chip makers rallied on optimism ahead of earnings reports from technology bellwethers.

    The Dow Jones industrial average gained 75.68 points, or 0.75 percent, to 10,173.58. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 8.20 points, or 0.77 percent, to 1,073.08. The Nasdaq Composite Index added 20.58 points, or 0.94 percent, to 2,199.63.

    Stocks were lifted by solid earnings from Halliburton and a strong order outlook from Boeing .
