Swedish crown princess to wed on June 19


    STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - The heiress to Sweden's throne, Crown Princess Victoria, will marry her long-standing boyfriend Daniel Westling on June 19, the Swedish royal court said Monday.

    The marriage between Victoria, 31, and Westling, a 35-year-old gym owner, is scheduled to take place in Stockholm, the court said on its website.

    The couple announced their engagement last month.

    Victoria became the heir apparent in 1980 after a constitutional reform allowed for the throne to be inherited by the monarch's eldest child regardless of their gender.

    Carl XVI Gustaf, the father of Victoria, has been king of Sweden since 1973. The last SWEDISH (SWMA.ES)royal wedding was in 1976, also on June 19, when he married German-born Silvia Sommerlath, whom he met at the Munich Olympics in 1972.

    Sweden is a constitutional monarchy and the king has no political power, though he is popular in the Nordic country.

    Its monarchy traces its origins back more than 1,000 years, though the current royal family assumed the throne in the early 19th century when French marshal Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte became king. He had been elected as successor to the Swedish throne by Sweden's parliament in 1810.
