Wall Street reverses course in choppy trade

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Nasdaq stock index rose more than 1 percent while the S&P 500 turned positive in choppy trade on Tuesday, with a slide in materials stocks offset by a recovery in technology shares after Monday's sell-off.

The Dow industrials rebounded, led by Home Depot after a government report showing a surprising jump in housing starts.

The Dow Jones industrial average added 17.28 points, or 0.24 percent, to 7,234.25. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index rose 4.90 points, or 0.65 percent, to 758.79. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 16.96 points, or 1.21 percent, to 1,420.98.
