WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry announced plans on Wednesday to expand the Refugee Admissions Program to help people fleeing violence in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.
Kerry said the expansion will offer vulnerable Central Americans "a safe and legal alternative to the dangerous journey many are currently tempted to begin, making them easy prey for human smugglers who have no interest but their own profits."
In a speech at the National Defense University, Kerry said called the refugee crisis a global challenge.
