MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Somali police ambushed and shot dead 17 fighters of the militant al Shabaab insurgent movement Friday during an attempted attack on a senior official in Mogadishu, a police spokesman said.

Islamist insurgents, who have been fighting the government and its Ethiopian military allies for about two years, carry out near-daily strikes in Mogadishu and hold a town within nine miles (14 km) of the capital.

Residents said well-armed al Shabaab fighters in cars moved to the house of the local Madina district chairman early in the morning. The police said they were waiting.

"We got information before they left their hideouts and so we were able to surround them," spokesman Abdullahi Hassan Barise said. "Thirteen of the dead bodies lie in the street near the chairman's house."
