BERLIN (Reuters) - A large fire at Berlin's Tegel airport forced the diversion of several flights Thursday but an airport spokesman said firefighters had controlled the blaze and traffic was back to normal.

The fire, whose cause was not known, had broken out in an empty quarantine station located close to the airport's military section, the spokesman said.

Four incoming flights, including one operated by Germany's Lufthansa, had been diverted to Schoenefeld airport in the eastern part of the capital because clouds of dark smoke had made landing difficult.

The measure was also taken due to concerns that not enough airport firefighters would be available at Tegel in case of an emergency linked to normal airport traffic, said the spokesman.

More than 130 firefighters had managed to get the blaze under control by around 10 a.m. (9 a.m. British time), he said. Police said earlier that the fire had posed no immediate danger to life.
