JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli police said Sunday they were holding a Jewish settler who they said had confessed to killing two Palestinians and bombing the home of an Israeli professor among a string of attacks over the past decade.

Police and Shin Bet undercover agents arrested Yaakov "Jack" Teitel, a 37-year-old American immigrant, last month as he was handing out leaflets condemning homosexuals.

Jerusalem police chief Aharon Franco told a news conference that the father of four appeared to have acted alone during his long campaign of violence against those he saw as enemies.

These allegedly included a Palestinian shepherd killed more than a decade ago and Professor Zeev Sternhell, an outspoken Israeli critic of Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank, who was wounded by a pipe bomb at his Jerusalem home last year.

Such attacks have rekindled fears that ideological friction in Israel could explode into internal violence as its leaders look to reach a land-for-peace deal with Palestinians.
