Hundreds flee into Uganda to escape Congo rebels

GOMA, Congo (Reuters) - Hundreds of Congolese civilians fled across the border into neighbouring Uganda on Wednesday from reported attacks on villages by rebels loyal to General Laurent Nkunda, a U.N. refugee official said.

Roberta Russo, spokesperson for the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR in the Ugandan capital Kampala, told Reuters that 1,300 Congolese refugees had crossed through the border town of Ishasha since Tuesday afternoon.

"My colleagues at the border say there is just a stream of people coming," she said. The newcomers joined more than 13,000 Congolese who had already fled into Uganda since August.

She added some of the refugees who crossed into Uganda reported their villages in the Rutshuru district of Democratic Republic of Congo's eastern North Kivu province had been attacked two days ago by Tutsi rebels loyal to Nkunda.

A rebel spokesman said Nkunda's forces had launched what he called a "policing" operation north of Rutshuru town, which they seized in October, moving towards the Ugandan border to flush out Rwandan Hutu militia who were their long-standing enemies.

Rebel spokesman Bertrand Bisimwe denied the rebel operations affected a cease-fire declared by Nkunda and said the Hutu FDLR militia fighters were using civilians as human "shields" to cover their retreat.

The latest incidents, which Bisimwe said did not involve Congolese government forces, followed a relative lull in fighting in North Kivu where weeks of combat had driven nearly a quarter of a million people from their homes since August.
