Congo rebels say pulling back to help peace effort

KINSHASA (Reuters) - Congolese Tutsi rebels said on Tuesday they were pulling back their forces on two fronts in eastern North Kivu province to support a United Nations initiative to end the conflict in the region.

The rebel National Congress for the Defence of the People (CNDP) led by renegade General Laurent Nkunda said it had decided a "unilateral and immediate pull back of CNDP troops by a distance of 40 km on the Kanyabayonga-Nyanzale and Kabasha-Kiwanja fronts."

It said in a statement these "separation zones" between rebel and government forces should be occupied by U.N. peacekeepers and no other armed force.

The CNDP said its deputy chief of staff would meet the Congolese national army land forces commander Wednesday near Rwindi, where well-armed rebel fighters have pushed back the demoralised Congolese army in recent days.

They would discuss "ways of setting up separation zones between the two armies to prevent any possibility of confrontation," the rebel statement added.

The U.N. peacekeeping force in Democratic Republic of Congo said it was checking whether the announced rebel pull-back was actually taking place on the ground in the combat zones.

"Separation of forces would be a good step in the right direction, " U.N. military spokesman Lt.-Col. Jean-Paul Dietrich told Reuters.
