The blockbusters has just arrived at US box office and that’s mean that money will run among all theaters. This May second weekend will be great as the past one thanks of Iron Man, Speed Racer and What happens in Vegas. The final weekend gross will surpass 135-140M$, a number higher than other years, including the last one, when Spider-Man 3 was number one during its second frame.
This weekend, Iron Man has enough energy to repeat at number one position, falling no more than 50-55% to a 45-48M$ second gross. With that, Marvel production will surpass more than 175M$ in only 10 days.
Iron Man’s grosses are more positive than Marvel’s predicted and the excellent reviews are making to the production company to think about a final gross of 250M$.
Robert Downey, Jr movie has been very well accepted by comic fans and also among a variety audience of men and women older than 25. These mean that the film could have a mouth-to-mouth effect, helping the movie with weekend gross drop of less than 50%.
The competition is too high, but Iron Man has a good breastplate.
This weekend the major studios will release two films: Speed Racer and What happens in Vegas.
Warner’s Speed Racer is the direct competition of Iron Man. Both films are blockbusters, with a lot of special effects and a large release of more than 3’500 sites around the country and Canada. But Speed Racer has a couple of problems which will effect negatively to the final gross.
The question now is whether Speed Racer will be a hit or a flop. A couple of months early everybody though that the film was going to hit the box office but know, two days before we have enough elements to be close to a flop as The Golden Compass was. The early reviews, on line fans’ comments and the preview screeners has been bad and indicated that moviegoers aren’t very attracted to go to cinema.
Speed Race looks like a child movie close to Scooby Doo and The Flinstone but with a lot of action sequences. But teen audience has not very enthusiastic with the proposal and that could mean that the film won’t to surpass 40M$ gross (or less) during the first weekend.
Contrary as Iron Man, Speed Race won’t to have a very good mouth-to-mouth effect so the film will drop between 55-65% every week, especially the two next weekends, with Narnia and Indiana Jones fighting.
What happens in Vegas is the third titles to be released this weekend. Fox has the intention to catch female audience from movies as Speed Racer and Iron Man, as Made of honor did last week.
Fox has spent a lot of money in the promotion campaign trying to attract other moviegoers who want to see the “beautiful” couple Diaz&Kutcher. The movie plot is very similar as other Kutcher film, Just Murried, which was a success five years ago. On the other side, Cameron Diaz doesn’t have any big success in comedy genere. Despite of this last information What happens in Vegas bows in 3,200 sites with the intention to gross more than 20M$ during this three days.
About the other titles still in theaters only the adult comedies as Baby Mama and Forgetting Sarah Marshall will have enough energy to go on with good numbers. Both films could drop between a 40-45%.
Made of honor will have to fight with Cameron Diaz’s Vegas to catch people at its cinemas but the attraction of Patrick Dempsey and Michelle Monaghan don’t looks enough to do this. The Sony’s comedy could fall more than a 45% and cume more than 26M$. It’s not a great number, but Sony hope that the film will have a better run in international markets and in DVD/TV exploitation.
Children films as The Forbidden Kingdom and Nim`s island will not carry the pressure of Speed Race and Iron Man releases and both drop more than a 45% saying goodbye at box office with normal numbers.
