After the most successfull Martin Luther King weekend, majors studios will bow three stupid films without any interest among general audiences. Silvester Stallone’s Rambo fourth sequel John Rambo, Diane Lane’s infromatic thriller Untraceable and the parodic Meet the Spartans. Each of them in about 2,500 sites.
John Rambo will arrive in 2,751 venues with the same intention than Rocky Balboa, the sixth stanment of Rocky’s saga which obtained an important success last year. Stallone is revisiting his popular charatcers to rebow his carrera as an actor and director.
Last year, Rocky Balboa gross more than $150M overseas because the film conected with the adult audiences. John Rambo has the same objective: catch the old moviegoers which used to go to see the other Rambo adventures and other similar films (with Chuck Norris, Steven Segal, Jean Claude Van Damme,…).
Lionsgate wants to gross $15M during the first frame, and try to keep the atention of this audiences during the next two or three weeks. On its side, Rambo won’t has any other action film during this time and that could be positive. Moreover, the action films drop more than a 50% during their second and third frame. We will see, because Rambo is one of the most popular characters of cinema histroy and that’s enough to keep the attention of the audiences.
John Rambo has a low budget of $30M.
Meet the Spartants is the other weekend big release. Fox bows the film in 2,605 sites and will obtain the same results of other parodic movies as Date Movie, Epic Movie, and others, which gross $12-14M during the first weekend.
On the other hand, Spartants has the direct competiton of Cloverfield, which also attracts the attention of teen moviegoers and than could affect negativly.
Likewise, Cloverfield has the same problem. The horror J.J. Abrams pic will dropp among a 50% during its second frame to $20M. Despite this, the film will gross more than $70M enough to have benefits.
Untraceable bows in more than 2,400 sites and aims to atract the attention female that are searching for some thriller and misterious film as Premoniton and Breach.
Correctly, Sony has promoted the film with the female presence of Diane Lead and presenting the plot of the film without too many details. Sony is waiting to gross around $10M during the first frame. As the other weekend released movies, Untraceable has a low budget of $30M.
Moreover, this weekend is important for the presence of the Academy Award movies nominated to Best Pic. Michael Clayton and No country for old men expand considerably its locations to be in more than 1,200 sites each one. Both films have the chance to obtain another $2M during this weekend, hoping to keep audiences after this week.
Atonement and Juno, both nominated at the main award as well, add some sites but less than 100. Joe Wright’s nominated drama Atonement will gross more than $5M and cume close to $40M. Overseas, the film is a success in each country where is released, until now the movie has grossed more than $50M.
Juno could start to lose some atraction to audiences after more than 8 weeks in theaters, but the film could gross more than $7M and waiting to cume $100M in few days.
