This weekend B.O. will be very calm and out of exeptional numbers, far from last weekend with Jumper or Step Up 2 the streets. One big budget film, Sony’s The vanage point, a stupid comedy, Witless Protections, and two little independent films with some prestigious names, Be Kind, Rewind and Charlie Barlett.
Sony bows The vantage point in 3,149 locations with the intention to climb the B.O. during its first frame.
The film is similar to The Sentinel, last Michael Douglas thriller released last year. As Sentinel did in April, Vantage could attract adult female audiences thanks of its twisted and thriller plot, and moreover for its stunning cast (Dennis Quiad, Sigourney Waever, Forrest Whitaker, William Hurt, and many others)
Also, Vantage has a similar taste in B.O. as Premonition did last year. Both films are released in calm weekend without many direct competition. Other adult pics, as Juno, No country, Michael Clayton or There will be blood, are exhausted and that could be beneficious to Sony picture.
The Vantage Point could obtain more than $18M at first frame.
Charlie Barlett and Be Kind, rewind are the indie films released this weekend in less than 1,200 sites with the intentions to attract adult and young urban audiences who wants to see this kind of films.
New Line bows Be kind, rewind in a limited 800 sites. The major trust in the contection of Michael Gondry with alternative audiences who loves his early film (Eternal Sunshine of spotless mind and The Science of sleep) and that garantee more than $4,000-$5,000 per site.
Be kind has a important competence this weekend, Charlie Barlett and the Oscar nominees films. Michael Gondry’s films is directed to cinema audiences who loves cinema and that could mean this people will go to see the nominees films before this Sunday ceremony.
Also, the projections of this sunday will be less important that other normal weekend, because their audiences will be seeing the Academy Awards ceremony.
Despite of this, Be kind, rewind has obtained good reviews and that could be important to gross more than $5M during the first weekend.
New Line’s fantastic comedy had a final budget of $20M.
Charlie Barlett is the other “independent” comedy released this weekend in 1,122 sites by MGM. The film looks like a cult movie as Thumbsucket or Altar Boys, but both films were a flop in B.O.. Charlie has a similar audiences than Be Kind, rewind and that could affect negativly the final gross.
More important, MGM has a bad eye to release film not only making trailers and poster but also in poster and other advertising material.
Charlie could not surpass $4M during its first frame.
Larry the Cable Guy’s new comedy Witless Protection releases in 1,333 sites by Lionsgate. Early Larry’s films hasn’t been a success and that’s mean that Larry hasn’t attraction among theater audiences.
Lionsgate has focused its promotion among young people who isn’t interested in Jumper, Step Up or romantic comedies as Fool’s Gold. But in my opinion, I think this isn’t enough to fill the theatears and early Larry’s films hadn’t never obtained more than $4,000 per site.
Lionsgate could gross among $3’5M during this three days.
Last weekend released film The Spiderwick Chronicles could keep family and young audiences during its second frame, falling a 30-35% to $13’5M.
With this second frame Spiderwick will cume more than $44M, a half of its budget.
On its side, Spiderwick hasn’t many direct competitions and that could be basic to keep good grosses during following weekends as Charlotte’s web and Bridge of Terabithia did.
Jumper and Step Up will drop more than a 50% after their strong first weekend. Despite of this fall, both film will cume enough money to have a benefit in few weeks.
My weekend predictions is:
| # | Title | Gross | Fall% | Cume |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Vantage point | $18M | new | $18M |
| 2 | Jumper | $14’5M | -55% | $58’5M |
| 3 | The Spiderwick Chronicles | $13’5M | -30% | $44M |
| 4 | Step Up 2 the streets | $9M | -52% | $40’2M |
| 5 | Fool’s Gold | $7’5M | -42% | $53’4M |
| 6 | Definitely, Maybe | $5’7M | -40% | $22M |
| 7 | Be kind, rewind | $5’2M | new | $5’2M |
| 8 | Juno | $4’3M | -15% | $131’2M |
| 9 | Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins | $4M | -50% | $35’5M |
| 10 | Charlie Barlett | $4M | new | $4M |
