Indy is coming to town. And he wants to hit the box office as an old-time movie. Steven Spielberg’s fourth part of Indiana Jones saga arrives at theaters with a high expectation to break records. Distributed by Paramount, the films was released yesterday with the intention to add one day more to the four-days President’s weekend.
Everybody has been waiting for him, and the expectations for the first day are among 40M$ or plus. The gross record in a President weekend is still for Pirates of the Caribbean: At the world’s end which gross 139M$, and the five-days gross record is for Star Wars. Episode I, with 170M$.
The new Indiana chapter wants a record, but maybe it doesn’t happen because the time has change a lot, and people goes less to cinemas that two o three years ago. But, easly Indiana Jones and the kingdom of the crystal skull could surpass the 165M$ on Monday and that’s not a record but is an exceptional number to start.
The promotion campaign of the film hasn’t been a bombardment, but the presence of the characters and actors has been constant and enough to remember to see the film. Indiana doesn’t need a large promotion, but needs notoriety in newspapers, magazines and TV shows, because people wants to know that the new film will be big.
Indiana Jones and the kingdom of the crystal skull is big and is the main phenomenon of 2008. If the film starts with this gross, easly will surpass the 300M$ final gross only in domestic, enough to recover the 125M$ budget.
The presence of Spielberg’s film has caused the absence of other releases. For this reason and the extra weekend day the released film in past weeks could keep the attention of the audience, especially The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian which was released past week. Disney’s new film could drop only a 25% and add 40M$ more at its gross, which will surpass the 100M$ mark.
Narnia second movie is far for the results of the original film but the film has cost 80M$ less than the original film. Disney expects to arrive at 165M$ enough to be positive with the result.
Overseas, the film could easly surpass the 250M$.
Iron Man and What happens in Vegas will drop less than a 30%. Both film are being a really success among general audiences, and that could help the keep the attention of adult audiences.
Speed Racer will be the film which fall more in the top10. Warner manga adaptation has been the season flop and anybody wants to see the film. Despite the four days, the film will drop a 37%.
