Martin Luther King’s weekend is here. And this is a special occasion to celebrate by bowing a particular film: Cloverfield. J.J. Abrams’ new sci-fi movie is one of the most expected releases in much time. Paramount launches the film in 3,411 sites aiming to attract teen and middle age audience, especially the people who has participated in the active promotion.
Colverfield has made a very smart promotion across the Net, specially showing images, various trailers and many other fake materials which have brought a high interest among young audiences to the movie. If J.J. Abrams’ adventure catches the attention of the same audiences who didn’t see Snakes on a plane, the film will gross more than $40M during these four days.
The film is very popular among web sites, forums and others, as Snakes on a plane was two years ago, and that scares Paramount which doesn’t want to obtain the same poor results as Snakes did during its first frame (less than $15 M).
But Cloverfield has something that Snakes didn’t have: nobody knows anything about it. This mysterious plot could attract many sorts of audiences, including adult people during next weekends. In my opinion, Cloverfield is an exceptional marketing product which could be one of the most successful movies in the first 2008 quarter.
The other two releases of this weekend are comedies: 27 dresses and Mad Money. Both films are focused in female audiences and that could prejudice both of them.
27 Dresses is a classical romantic comedy which could catch young girls, and women among 25 and 30 years. The plot of the movie is about a 29 years-old woman who wants to get married with her sister’s boyfriend (I think, I didn’t understand very well the trailer). Fox bows the film in more than 3,000 sites, and has the chance to obtain more the $30M during these days.
If the movie keeps the attention of female audiences, the final gross will be more than $75M.
Mad Money is released in 2,400 sites but with a reduced promotion campaign. Its main mistake is that nobody knows that the film is going to be released in this weekend. Despite the names of Diane Keaton, Queen Latifah and Katie Holmes, the film hasn’t any chance to obtain more than $10M.
However, the film could attract adult female audiences as The Bucket List did last weekend. But the presence of Nicholson-Freeman film is still hot, and this could prejudice Mad Money.
About the released movies, Atonement and Sweeney Todd have the chance to up its past weekend grosses. Both films obtained the Golden Globe Best Pic past Sunday, and this could benefit the movies. Because of this, Dreamworks and Focus will add many sites at both movies, with the intention to attract more audiences. I think that Atonement and Sweeney Todd grosses will raise 20-25%.
