Los ‘pájaros cabreados’ de la finlandesa Rovio han arrasado este año en todas las plataformas móviles. Tres ediciones del juego Angry Birds (la original, Rio y Seasons) figuran entre las 10 aplicaciones para móviles más descargadas del año a escala mundial, según la clasificación elaborada por Distimo. La segunda apli móvil más popular de 2011 ha sido Facebook, y la tercera Skype. Los juegos y las redes sociales o, en un sentido más amplio, las comunicaciones, han dominado el interés de los usuarios de smartphones y tabletas. Skype, el líder de la telefonía por Internet adquirido hace poco por Microsoft, también ha salido de compras por su cuenta, y acaba de firmar un acuerdo para adquirir la firma GroupMe de mensajería móvil en grupo.
GroupMe es una empresa muy nueva, pues fue fundada en Nueva York en 2010. Su servicio permite que grupos de usuarios se envíen mensajes de texto, establezcan multiconferencias de voz y compartan imágenes y datos de ubicación. Dispone de aplicaciones para smartphones iOS, Android, BlackBerry y Windows Phone (si bien no para Symbian) y también se puede utilizar mediante mensajes SMS. Skype ha afirmado que la compra, cuyo importe no ha sido revelado, complementa la adquisición de Qik, el proveedor de vídeo para móviles con el que se hizo a principios de este año.

Skype today announced an updated version of its Skype for Android app – Skype for Android 2.0, bringing Skype Video Calling to the currently fastest growing mobile OS1.
With the new version, users will be able to make and receive free2 1-to-1 video calls over Skype between their Android phone and other Skype contacts on the iPhone, Mac, Windows PCs and even TVs3. Skype for Android with video works over Wi-Fi or 3G data connections and can be downloaded for free from the Android Market or Skype.com/m using any phone browser.

Comcast Corporation (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK) and Skype today announced that the companies have entered into a strategic partnership that will enable Comcast customers to communicate with family and friends through HD video calling on their television. They will soon be able to make and receive Skype video calls from their television, whether their friends and family use Skype on their home TVs, PCs, compatible smartphones or tablets.

Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: “MSFT”) and Skype Global S.à r.l today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Microsoft will acquire Skype, the leading Internet communications company, for $8.5 billion in cash from the investor group led by Silver Lake. The agreement has been approved by the boards of directors of both Microsoft and Skype.

Today Qik, mobile video software recently acquired by Skype, launched a new iPhone app called Qik Video Connect. The new app enables individuals to stay connected with friends and family through video calling, video messaging, and video sharing.
With Qik Video Connect, users can instantly share what is happening around them with friends and family through a live video call. If they aren’t able to connect live, then users can still share all the rich details of the moment by sending a video mail. They can even post a live video link to Facebook and Twitter so friends can watch the moment as it is being recorded. The new social video feed makes it easy to follow what friends are doing by receiving alerts when new videos are shared and watching those videos right from the phone.
