Envivio, the leading provider of live and on-demand multi-screen video processing solutions, announced today it has added support for the new Windows Phone 7 operating system to its multi-screen video head ends based on the 4Caster™ C4 family of encoder/transcoders. The enhancement will maximize video quality by using the industry’s highest quality H.264 compression—Envivio Extreme™ encoding—and provide support for the advanced playback and content protection features Telco operators and over the top service providers need to offer premium video services.
“The combination of the Envivio Three Screens video processing platform and Microsoft IIS Smooth Streaming has proven itself a winner for deployments around the world,” said Envivio vice president of marketing Boris Felts. “Providing support for Windows Phone 7 is a natural extension of the work we have already done with Microsoft and furthers Envivio’s commitment to enabling the best video services for the latest generation of smartphones.”

Envivio, the leading provider of live and on-demand multi-screen video processing solutions, announced today that a new firmware upgrade for its 4Caster C4 family of Three Screen video encoders brings to market the world’s first unified, broadcast-quality, video processing platform with built-in support for all leading IPTV, Mobile and Internet TV video formats. The new 4Caster 2.3 release will be on display for the first time at IBC 2010 in Stand 1.D72.
With the new 4Caster C4 offering, service providers can reduce the complexity and cost of their video headends by using a single encoder to handle all of the pre-processing of a source and then output concurrent, high quality, optimized streams to support any device in their network. Content and TV channel providers can deploy a single encoder to prepare a channel or content stream for simultaneous distribution to multiple service providers and a variety of delivery platforms. In both cases, the upgrade significantly reduces the need for multiple, parallel silos of equipment.
“Everyone is talking about the new multi-screen world, but video headend providers are still offering old-style, single-purpose headends for video processing,” said Boris Felts, VP of marketing, Envivio. “With our latest generation 4Caster C4 firmware, Envivio dramatically simplifies planning and development for service providers, broadcasters, and content owners. Not only can they repurpose 4Caster C4 systems for other screens―a feature Envivio has offered for years―but each encoder can support multiple screens and adapt to changing services. Regardless of configuration, each screen receives the full benefit of Envivio’s proven and patented industry-leading technologies for maximizing video quality.”
The new 4Caster C4 firmware provides key enhancements that simplify deployment of Over the Top video services, including a native publishing interface for leading content delivery networks such as Akamai, Level 3 and Limelight, as well as integrated content protection via Playready and HLS encryption with built-in key interfaces for major DRM platforms. Envivio has extended the system’s unmatched picture quality with added support for 1080p resolution video for Flash, PIFF and Apple HTTP Live Streaming. Support for alternative audio streams, subtitles, closed captioning and significantly reduced end to end transmission delay as compared to the live event extend the appeal of Over the Top video services by creating a sophisticated experience comparable to DVD and advanced digital services. In stream ad insertion creates new opportunities for revenue development.
All screens benefit from a new generation of video pre-processing tools that improve the quality of source signals and ensure that content is optimized before compression begins. Furthermore, Envivio’s new release of its proprietary Extreme encoding technology increases the efficiency and quality of the compression codec, yielding measurable results including a ten percent compression improvement for mobile services.
A new array of video cross-conversion upscaling algorithms uses proprietary Envivio technology to eliminate the need for additional stand-alone hardware. Based on an advanced combination of field structure analysis, motion-adaptive deinterlacing and polyphase resizing filters, the video quality achieved through these Envivio-exclusive enhancements rivals the most expensive SD to HD cross-converters.

4Caster M2 Encoders Enable Harris and LG Electronics to Present Live Showcase of Proposed IP-based Delivery Platform
South San Francisco, CA – April 14, 2008 – Envivio Inc., the leading technology provider of IP video convergence encoding solutions from mobile to HD, today announced that its 4Caster M2 mobile TV encoders are being used in a live demonstration at NAB 2008 of the MPH™ (Mobile-Pedestrian Handheld) in-band mobile DTV system. This demonstration leverages the capability of Envivio Mobile Series encoders to deliver high-quality, advanced, in-band TV services to a range of consumer handheld and mobile devices.
The MPH partners, Harris Corporation, LG Electronics and Zenith, will demonstrate the capabilities of their IP-based delivery system in an over-the-air (OTA) MPH mobile DTV broadcast by KVCW-DT, a Sinclair Broadcasting Group-owned station serving the Las Vegas market. IP-based delivery will also be demonstrated on a closed circuit broadcast originating from the Harris Booth (N2502) in the North Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center at the 2008 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) convention from April 14-17.
For the demonstration Envivio has provided versions of its 4Caster M2 encoders which support the requirements of the MPH system. As the world’s leading supplier of encoding solutions for mobile TV, Envivio encoding systems already power hundreds of mobile TV encoder deployments worldwide. The flexible design of Envivio’s 4Caster M2 enables the company to rapidly accommodate evolving mobile TV requirements such as MPH within its existing 4Caster M2 product.
The IP-based delivery system takes the high-quality encoded content provided by the 4Caster M2 and uses a new station-side platform developed jointly by Triveni Digital and UDcast to enable IP encapsulation within the legacy MPEG-2 transport stream. This system meets the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) requirements for a new technology called ATSC-M/H, which will enable the delivery of in-band television content and data to mobile and handheld devices via DTV broadcast signals.
The MPH demonstration relies on high-quality audio and video delivered at very efficient data rates to reliably deliver multiple channels of content and interactive services to devices that are on the move. With its inherent flexibility and power to output multiple device profiles simultaneously, the 4Caster M2 delivers an optimum mobile TV viewing experience to any mobile device via any transmission infrastructure.
