NEC to show smallest all-in-one compact LTE base station at MWC 2010

Tokyo & London February 10, 2010 - NEC Corporation (NEC) announced today that it will showcase the world’s smallest, all-in-one compact LTE (Long Term Evolution) base station at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2010 next week. It will enable mobile operators to tailor the provision of their LTE services according to capacity demand, from small-scale to wide-scale commercial deployments.

NEC’s new base station is 3GPP (Partnership Project) mobile communications standards-compliant and integrates REC (Radio Equipment Controller) control functions and RE (Radio Equipment) transmission functions.

Measuring 420mm width, 230mm height, 130mm depth it is the industry’s smallest base station. It weighs 12kg, a light weight to carry, and with the removal of cooling fans consumes 75 per cent less power compared to NEC’s existing W-CDMA product range. The new product is SON-managed (Self Organizing Network), enabling efficient, easier and faster deployment and operation of LTE at a much lower cost than previous 2G and 3G deployments.

“Mobile operators have to meet the continuous challenge of rising mobile traffic, particularly at radio access. The industry is close to the limits of spectral efficiency so in order to keep up with the exponential traffic frequency must be reused. In addition, 2G, 3G and LTE are likely to co-exist for some years to come. Deploying LTE as micro/pico/femtocells where there is actual capacity demand is potentially simpler, cheaper and faster and can provide operators with the flexibility to transition gradually to 4G while maintaining their 2G and 3G networks ,” said Kazuya Hashimoto, General Manager of Mobile Radio Access Network Division, NEC.

NEC offers a wide portfolio of LTE eNBs (evolved Node B) ranging from macro to micro/pico and femtocells to help mobile operators meet their capacity, coverage and performance needs. With the launch of NEC’s all-in-one compact LTE base station, NEC offers a comprehensive and competitive set of solutions for LTE/SAE small cell deployment.

NEC will attend the Mobile World Congress 2010 (MWC 2010), a premier industry event held in Barcelona, Spain, on 15 – 18 February 2010, at Booth 8A125 (Hall 8).
