Yes, real-time email is nice, but if there’s a communications application that really benefits from a permanent connection, that’s instant messaging. Thus, BlackBerry users will be happy to know that they can now use Google Talk, Google’s own messenger. And Google’s network gets a big boost for further adoption in business circles.

Canadian company Research in Motion (RIM) has just released a program that allows sending and receiving instant text messages over the Google Talk network from BlackBerry handhelds. In order to use Google Talk for BlackBerry Devices, you must download the client program from RIM’s website (please be advised, it only works with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer web browsers) and having an account in the Google Talk service, which equals a Gmail mailbox, given that they share a single user name. Google Talk is based on the Jabber public IM protocol, so you should also be able to message with other Jabber-based networks.
The program does not only allow text conversations, but also adding, blocking and deleting contacts, as well as receiving alerts when one of your contacts logs in. According to RIM, the push email service remains active while using Google Talk.
Version 1.0 of Google Talk for BlackBerry Devices is still in beta stage. The user guide (PDF, 114 KB) is available here.
Also for Yahoo
Google Talk is not the first IM application for the BlackBerry, not even the first officially supported one: since last September, there’s also a client for the Yahoo Messenger network.
