Hitachi retracts about planned 6-GB palmOne device

Hitachi Spain has just backed out from its previous announcement about palmOne planning to use Hitachi’s new 6-GB microdrive in a future device. The company says it cannot confirm nor deny palmOne’s future product plans.

Last Thursday we spotted, in a Hitachi Spain press release about their new 6-GB Microdrive, a headline about palmOne’s plans to use it in a new generation of devices.

Not surprisingly, given the usual secrecy of palmOne about future products, the news got quickly posted in every major PDA/gadget news site, including 1src, Brighthand, Engadget, Gizmodo, Palm Infocenter and Treonauts, among dozens of others that relayed our story.

Hitachi Spain has contacted CanalPDA asking us to remove the item, saying that their announcement was a mistake and that they are not allowed to comment on their customer companies’ plans. The job of making palmOne’s products public remains solely on palmOne, so now it’s up to the usual rumor mill to keep commenting or not.

As for ourselves, we’ll keep trying to post only stories that are backed by solid enough evidence, as in this case, and letting our readers know about any further development.
